Gary Kinder American decathlete

I just finished Gary Kinder’s 1982 edition of “Victim” about the HiFi Murders in Ogden, Utah. Cortney swam with my sisters and I in the summers at the Ogden Golf and Country Club. We were good friends with Byron, Carol, Claire, Cortney and Uncle Paul Naisbitt. My dad, Dr John D Schirack, was an anesthesiologist for years at the Dee Hosp then McKay-Dee. He was Dr Ernie Grua’s anesthesiologist. So many doctors in your book were friends of our family. Cortney had a crush on my youngest sister, Nina ‘75 OHS. Jed Naisbitt was a swim friend (Paul’s son) and class of ‘73 OHS with me. You probably don’t know but I thought I’d write and ask you. As Cortney was so critical and nobody gave much hope he’d live, Byron had him transferred to McKay Dee. He was confident that his good buddy anesthesiologist would do the surgery even though Cortney’s blood counts were too low. I just wonder if my dad was that anesthesiologist. Byron may of never said who it was for fear of getting him in trouble. My dad died 03/08/2019, age almost 91. I have so many questions I wish I could ask him now!! He was mentally all there at the end, just a fragile body. You probably know Byron and Paul Naisbitt have both died. I want to thank you for creating such a compelling book about a terrible time in Ogden; terrible time for the tight-knit medical providers community, for the Ogden High students and for all the friends and family of the Naisbitt’s. Finally, Byron had a huge impact on my career choice. I earned my AD in Nursing in ‘76. I earned my BSN in ‘77. I had started working on the Postpartum unit (maternity) as I started in nursing. I finally retired in 2016 after nearly 40 years of Labor & Delivery nursing. Dr Byron was so supportive and caring, qualities that are often not apparent in ON-GYNs. On 4/23/1974 my mother had a thyroidectomy at McKay. On 4/24 or 4/25, I came from the U of U to visit her. Just as the elevator doors were closing, who should stick his arm in to stop it but Byron. He was concerned about my mom and came with me to see her. A couple days later I went with my dad for Carol’s viewing at Larkin. Carol’s coffin was closed but Michelle Ansley had an open coffin viewing in the next room. My mom had given Byron her precious crystal rosary for Carol to hold in her hands. That rosary had been blessed by Pope John XXIII. (Our family are cradle Catholics). Anyway, thank you so much for an amazing story! Linda Schirack Sowell, San Leandro, CA
