My father Thomas Trevor Williams Petty Officer (writer) served under Captain Ashmore on  the Valiant in 1942, even not a full officer himself, he spoke very fondly of Captain Ashley who spoke to my father which I understand was against naval rules, my father corresponded with his son Peter who was thrilled to hear from my father and was going to pass his letter on to his brother Sir Edward Beckwith Ashmore, GCB, DSC[704] Admiral of the Fleet in 1977. I  still have the correspondence in my possession.
